Random Thoughts: Time travel and intersections
July 29th, 2008
When someone finally cracks the code for the time space continuum and gets around to inventing teleportation, I’ve got a killer idea for the first application of teleportation devices, traffic intersections.
Think about it, one of the most aggravating things about driving is hitting red lights and stop signs. If we build a teleportation device into intersections for one direction of traffic — either north/south or east/west on the road — we wouldn’t need stop signs and traffic lights.
Anyone driving in any direction would be covered. Northbound/southbound traffic would teleport across the intersection and eastbound/westbound traffic would drive through the intersection. No more stopping. Unless you’re one of those crazy people that decides they want to turn at an intersection. In that case you’re just screwed.

Wouldn’t nailing the whole teleportation thing would render intersections, roads, and travel in general obsolete. Also…I guess I assumed apple would have this worked out in time for Macworld. iPort they’d call it.

Well, there’s always that. I was thinking that the initial teleportation devices would be a little too expensive for the average family to afford, whereas municipal governments could afford them.
Also, it might take longer for the science boys to figure out how to make the destination easily adjustable. Building one set of teleportation devices that only work with each other would be much simpler I think.
Note: Apple does not comment on rumors or speculation regarding potential upcoming products/services or research areas. ;)

Plus, do you really know if it’s possible to teleport while moving? My theory of teleportation dictates that since only a finite amount of space is moved, and unless that’s in some vacuum or shall I dare say… force field… then it’s probably impossible.
There’s one good thing about that, since the ‘Back to the Future principle’ would have to be put into place for people to travel through to a time where the intersection was clear then jump back, would require everyone to drive at 88mph. Slowing down at schools no longer required, or possible. :D
For Apple I’ll go straight to the probable rumours. They’ll make a new iPhone with the capability to teleport and jump through time. However, it would only take you to local AT&T hotspots full of marketers trying to sell extra stuff onto your plan.
Have a nice day.

That is, until your Powered By Microsoft™ device crashes mid-teleport. ;)

Alright, alright. So maybe teleportation is a bit of a stretch. Guess we’ll just have to settle for localized wormholes at intersections then.
Further to Oak’s thought, email was suppose to kill mail and the web is suppose to kill books but people still send mail and enjoy reading books. Even when teleportation is widely available people will still want to walk/drive. People are crazy that way. :)
