Bi-annual Post on Getting Fit

August 11th, 2008

It seems that I’ve written a decent amount about getting fit or getting healthy over the past couple years. Sometimes I stick with it and give regular updates, other times not so much. Whether that’s procrastination or a problem with motivation, I’m not sure.

As Van Halen once put it so elegantly, here I go again. With a little added pressure from some friends at work and some encouragement from some friends not at work, I’m hoping that it’s going to stick this time around.

And just how am I going to make some healthy changes in my life? Here’s a list. Feel free to call me out if I’m straying from this list around you.

  • Eating more fruits and vegetables (with help from spud.com)
  • Taking it easy on the drinking (not that this is a problem most of the time)
  • Taking antioxidants and/or daily vitamins
  • Drinking more water
  • Lifting weights 3 times a week
  • Doing cardio 3 times a week
  • Eating less red meat and more fish
  • Eating smaller meals and doing so more often

I’m really looking forward to being more fit, having more energy, and having a better overall outlook on life. Updates about gym routines, exercises, progress, and goals will be coming in the future.

After not working out for several months I forgot how hard it is. It could go without saying but I’m going to say it anyway, the first week absolutely kicked my ass! The sensation of feeling muscles I forgot I have took some getting used to, but I’m starting to like it.

Now that the actual working out part is getting a little easier — the weight isn’t easy, just the decision to go to the gym is — the big hurdle seems to be waking up on time. With an hour long commute to work, and my preference of working out in the morning, it’s important for me to get up early and give myself enough time to workout, shower, eat, and get to work. Given all that my goal is to get up around 6:15am. After two weeks of setting the alarm for that time it’s still a challenge every day. This is something I need to work on. I feel like crap.

January 18th, 2008

Yup, I really do. As a friend of mine used to say, I feel like 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag. I could list a bunch of reasons for why this is but I’m not going to. Breaking it down, the only excuse I have is that I’m a lazy procrastinator. Each and every reason I could have listed boils down to that one, simple fact. I want to change that. Getting healthy: The beginning

November 7th, 2006

As you may have noticed, these little updates are coming in a lot less often as of late. Sure, that could be due to my procrastination or even a lack of motivation but my excuse, on this blog at least, has been that it’s due to the fluctuations in my life right now. I think I’m finally ready to admit that it was more-so the procrastination and lack of motivation that’s been stalling my progress for getting healthier.

The Diet: Week 20 weigh in

October 17th, 2006

After a taking the last couple weeks off I’m back at the whole keeping-up-with-the-diet thing. This weigh in will be pretty poor considering my previous progress since I’ve been very bad at keeping up with any type of exercise.

For the last couple weeks I haven’t played any basketball and the only physical activity I have done is helping Colin and Eliza move. While I’ve had the opportunity to actually do more exercise I haven’t taken the initiative to follow through and I realize it’s my own fault. Hopefully my public admission of this will make me work harder. Read the rest of this entry »
