Roughnecks take season opener

January 17th, 2006

Well, the season has officially started for the Calgary Roughnecks and it started with a bang. Technically the game was last Friday but I’ve been a little tied up with some things so that’s why you’re getting this post today ;^)

The first game of the year was against the often rival city of Edmonton. I say often rival because it’s very true for hockey and football but since this is Edmonton’s first year in the NLL I can’t say this rivalry will be anything like our current rivalry with the Toronto Rock – talk about rivalries, it’s pure adrenaline when these teams play each other.

I’m pleased to report that the first digit in our record will be firmly placed in the W column. Take that you northern bastards! If you think that’s a little harsh I’ll give you some background. In an attempt to create a rivalry and inspire the ire of Calgarians, the owner of the Edmonton Rush took out a half page ad in our newspaper calling us out. I think the ad even mentioned them opening a certain can of whoop ass. Well, my dear Edmonton Rush, it looks like your can opener is busted.

Favorite TV shows

January 12th, 2006

After reading about Dave’s, Jen’s, and Scott’s fav TV shows I thought I would join in the fun. Below is a list of my top 10 TV shows.

  • CSI – the original
  • Law and Order – any will do
  • 24 – even though I only watch it on DVD and I’m always a season behind
  • Arrested Development – as long as it’s on the air and on DVD
  • Scrubs
  • LOST
  • The OC
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender – my fav cartoon on Saturday mornings
  • My Name is Earl – I am definitely not happy now that the moved it to the same time as CSI (good thing I have a couple east coast channels)
  • Magnum PI

I’m going to modify the list a little bit and throw in a couple shows that I’m interested in watching/buying/picking up

  • The Shield
  • Three’s Company – I used to watch this and I’m in the process of buying it on DVD
  • Seinfeld – loved it when it was on TV and have the first three seasons on DVD, it just didn’t make my list
  • Dead Like Me
  • Deadwood – probably interests me the most but I couldn’t justify paying $90 for season one on boxing day

Well, what do you like to watch? What would you only buy on DVD?

I think I’m going to pee myself. I’m watching the last minute of play in the Rose Bowl with the Texas Longhorns trying to make one of the most nail-biting comebacks I’ve seen a long time.

Trailing by 24 points in the third quarter, the Longhorns have been maintaining their cool and letting Vince Young do his thing. While the defense has been plagued with injuries — including one broken arm and a number of players out with leg cramps — the Young led offense are definitely showing their determination.

With roughly 20 seconds left, Young walked in the go ahead touchdown. The following 2 point conversion put the Longhorns ahead by 3.

As I write this last bit, USC came extremely close to putting the ball in field goal range but a missed pass has let the clock run out and the Texas Longhorn are the national champions. Great way to close out an undefeated regular season I’d say.

Congrats Longhorns, you deserve it!
